1, 3, or 5 Weeks: How Early Can an Ultrasound Detect Pregnancy?

If you think you might be pregnant, one of the first questions you may have is: Can an ultrasound tell yet?

The answer depends on how far along the pregnancy is. At 1 week, 3 weeks, and even some early 5-week pregnancies, an ultrasound may not show very much. Whether you are considering the abortion pill or just looking to learn how far along you are, you are right to look for an ultrasound for answers rather than relying on an online pregnancy calculator.

Can an Ultrasound Detect Pregnancy at 1 Week?

No. At 1 week pregnant, there isn't actually a pregnancy yet.

Pregnancy is measured from the first day of your last menstrual period, so "1 week pregnant" is usually before ovulation and before conception happens. Because of that, an ultrasound cannot detect a pregnancy at this stage.

Can an Ultrasound Detect Pregnancy at 3 Weeks?

Usually not.

At 3 weeks pregnant, fertilization may have just occurred, and the tiny embryo is too small to be seen on an ultrasound. Even if you are pregnant, an ultrasound likely won't show anything yet.

A pregnancy test may detect pregnancy hormones before an ultrasound can confirm a pregnancy.

Can an Ultrasound Detect Pregnancy at 5 Weeks?

Maybe.

By 5 weeks pregnant, an ultrasound may be able to see a small gestational sac inside the uterus. However, every pregnancy develops at a slightly different pace, so it is possible that very little is visible this early.

In many cases, we (or a healthcare provider) may recommend a follow-up ultrasound a week or two later to get a clearer picture.

What Can an Early Ultrasound Tell You?

An ultrasound can provide important information, including:

  • Whether a pregnancy is located in the uterus

  • How far along the pregnancy may be

  • Whether there is a detectable heartbeat (usually later in the first trimester)

  • Whether there are signs of an ectopic pregnancy or other concerns

Why Timing Matters

Getting an ultrasound too early can lead to uncertainty because there may simply not be enough development to see anything yet. Waiting until the pregnancy is a little further along often provides more accurate information and clearer answers.
